Division 1 - Glenelg 2 lost to Henley & Grange 3

In a tight fought battle, 4 of the 5 runs for the game were scored of long balls. Unfortunately Henley hit more of them than we did.

A third win for the season against the Senators sees our first sweep of the year. Pitching from Burkholder, Eldridge, Luders & McClure was outstanding, with old timers E-Ross and Zed winding back the clock with the bat, E-Ross going long over left field and Zeddy just falling short hitting the fence. In what surely must be a record for the GBC, five 17 year olds took that field for the day with Flynn Luders and Jacob Eldridge seeing their first Division 1 action.

Division 2 - Glenelg 0 lost to Henley & Grange 8

The last game before Christmas threw up another challenge for our developing team taking on the new and improved Henley at home.

Oz got the Brett ball to start this final game and he did not disappoint going 5.2 innings keeping Henley to only two runs. A great effort.

The other great effort was mags filling in behind the dish in Jaikob's absence with a sliced knee.

That is all she wrote as we could only muster an infield single to Hilly and a double to Flynn for the entire game.

We did have our chances to score having Mags hit by pitch followed by a sac bunt by Wurfel resulting in an error having two on with none out allowing for us to do our double steal move. Getting  them to third and second but unfortunately we could not get anyone home.

Hayden relieved Oz and had trouble finding the zone forcing hilly to come in to shut it out Bays going down 8 -0

We were still in it going into the last only 3 runs down but it seemed like from the moment everyone got there they were preoccupied with positional changes wrong colour tops and a general lack of mental preparedness. Maybe the week before was still lingering around but good teams always come prepared and worry about what it takes to make the team win. I don’t think we did this and we paid for it.

Off for Christmas the positive being we are still in the finals hunt and I know are good is good enough

Merry Christmas all. Never give up

Division 3 - Glenelg 12 def Henley & Grange 4

Back home this week facing the Rams from Henley & Grange, fresh with some new reinforcements from the arrival of the Hilliers we were good to go.

Flynn took the game ball and got us started thowing again to Lenny and the two of them quickly settled into a rhythm. A 1,2,3 top of the first, and another scoreless inning in the second and we had a nice defensive start. Offensively we did nothing in the first (although Rion did lace a line drive out to second to end the inning), but in the second some much more competitive at bats saw us put up a quick four spot.

The Rams pegged one back in the third but we responded emphatically with an 8 run inning of our own to put the game away. They scored three runs over the final three innings to peg it back to 12-4 and we failed to score in the final two innings but that can often be the case when you shut down the running game when you get ahead early.

Flynn was good but went deep into a lot of counts so has a little fine tuning before the second half – however he has been fantastic all season so far. Will Burke came in and threw gas for the final two innings and has a lot of potential. Both Flynn and Will hit the ball well, and between them and Lenny were the pick of our hitters – Thommo had a nice day as well.

Not a bad first half of the year – after losing our opening match we put together a nice string of wins to head into the break in 2nd place with a 8-1 record. Its been a real club effort with 25 players used in division 3 to date but we seem to be settling onto a core squad now. Enjoy the Christmas break and we’ll see you all in January.

Division 4 - Glenelg 16 def Kensington 0

The late week cloudy weather parted and we headed all the way up Greenhill Rd for a top of the table clash @ Kensies. The home Red Birds had made some big off season signings, but on this day only a handful of them were available.

Ronny called playball and GrAbroe lead-off and got to 2nd via some home town red pencil work. Bender kept his hot bat going and took full advantage of the hitter friendly park to put the visitors up 2-0. Four more hits in row, including a sharp line drive to RF from Gamer Eldridge and it was 3-0 and the bases full, the Cardinals hurler had seen enough and shut the door with a K to stop the Bays in their tracks.

Lachy took the hill and punched out 2 in the first and retired the home team in order. The Tigers tacked on 1 in the 2nd frame via a base hit and a sac fly. With limited strikes on offer in the 3rd the Bays put up a 7 spot and had jumped out to a 11-0 lead, coach Milhouse’s  2 run bloop shot a slap in the face to knock in runs 6 & 7. Former SABL Capps medallist Ewey was busy in CF, winding the clock back with some genuine Willy Mays stuff going on out there to rob the bays of a few hard hit balls.

Gamer rolled for a CG and looked pretty sharp along the way. Qualmann stung one into left in the late innings, but could only manage to rattle the fence. Kloeds followed this up with a 3 run johnson and we just needed to get the required 3 outs to notch up a pretty impressive win in our third straight game on the road.

The reward for this pretty strong W is a 2 game buffer atop the table to take into the Christmas break. Some old bodies, this one included, will very much enjoy the xmas break and get the radox baths in full effect as we prepare for the run home, looking to back up a very solid first half of the season. Merry Christmas and happy new year to the GBC family and friends, stay safe and enjoy the time off where you can.
