Division 1 - Glenelg 7 def Southern Districts 4

On the most important weekend of the season we find ourselves not only playing a baseball game but playing for a mate that is sorely missed.

Without a doubt the most important game of the regular season. Not only for our squad but club wide.

Playing for the Blake Horrocks Cup we are not holding back and are going more than all out to win the game. Chris Burkholder on the hill was more than fantastic. Throwing seven innings for us and really battled hard all day.

By far not our greatest effort with the bat but we did get off to a great start scoring three in the second. A game as important as this for both clubs we knew that South's would battle hard and with that pegged back for a 4-3 lead . Holding on to the last our boys were really struggling to get anything going. Then

Bottom nine

Two out and Noah Scott comes up with a plan that I thought was bloody fantastic.

Three walk in a row with some great batting by our boys.

Then steps in big max brown.

G slam to get the bay's over the line.

Thrilling way to end an emotional game.

Noah Scotts plan was brilliant. Love that kid

Brings back memories of Widdo giving up two game winning homers to the bay in one day. Was hoping he was gonna come on.

An amazing yet very emotional game was capped off in the perfect way. I'm sure the little fella was looking down on us at that moment.

We miss him but he's still a massive part of our squad

Rip Squid. We love ya mate

Division 3 - Glenelg 11 def Southern Districts 2

Bays get a grip on first.

Heading down south to face the reigning champs on Blake Horrocks cup day we needed to bring our best. Adam Shaw drove in our first run with a double to centre and we jumped out to a 1-0 lead. Jordan Bails chiming in with a first inning Johnson saw the bays put up a 4 spot in the first.

Tristan Stevens settled back down after a couple of 2 out hits to finish the first 4-2 up. He would go on to retire the next 9 hitters straight, including 4 punch outs. Going 2 for 3 with the stick Stevo had a nice all round game.

A 1 out walk to Qualmann gave Bails another chance to bat with runners on and his 2nd two run homer stretched out the bays lead. Our youngest player Adam Wurfel made his div 3 debut and went 2 for including a homer of his own.

A good team W capped off with Craig Handy finishing off the final 2 frames on the hill and squashing a late Hawks threat.

Division 4 - Glenelg 23 def Southern Districts 8

With Matty Holmes unavailable due to casting for the role of “Inspector Oliver Kloseoff” on Home and Away, the Al Gore’s called on an old favourite in Leon ‘Lenny” Eldridge to fill the void at 3B as Kymbo Slice slid back into starting duties.

On an unusually wind free sticky Saturday at FalconNotHawk Park, we had first use of the sticks to get this baby underway. A leadoff walk to Killer, a wild pitch, a dropped catch off a Freezer line drive, hits to the Fenomenon and the Krajinator and a walk to Sizzling Steak was the variety pack that gave us a 3-0 lead after a half. Kymbo sliced through the mudeye boys in the first and then things got crazy.

To sum up, here are some things that we experienced throughout the game:

  • What appeared to be a Krajinator home run was called a double
  • 14 hits for us, but also 13 walks (5 of those to Boris, in 5 plate appearances)
  • A 30+ minute stretch where our nostrils were overpowered by the smell of burning rubber
  • An appearance from the Bizarro Southern Rodney Nottage
  • We gave up a home run to a kid that maybe weighs 32 KG
  • Multiple hit games to Freezer, Feno, Kraj, Kymbo, Steak and Vdub
  • Multiple walk games to Boris, Killer and Kymbo

When all was said and done, we came out with a very bizarre 23-8 win. I want to send a massive “thanks” to Lenwah the Great, Alex “Death Machine” Marsh and Adam “BMX Bandit” Shaw for helping us out when we had just eight potential starters, at a place where historically playing with a bare nine can be risky at best. On a day where the entire club was honouring our mate Squid, it is the little things like going the extra mile to help your teammates out that means so much more. Another thing Blakey liked was of course winning. The 3’s and 4’s took care of business away from home, meaning we could have that “mission accomplished” feel before joining our brothers and sisters back at the GBC for a night of celebration and toasting one of our own who is sadly missed.

Division 5 - Glenelg 6 def Tigers 5

Derby time at the GBC with the original Glenelg team taking on new kids on the block 'Tigers'.

Game was tight through first 5 innings with pitchers Wilbur (Glenelg) & Bradey (Tigers) holding the hitters to scattered hits, and we headed into the top 6th with the score a tight 2-1 in favour of Glenelg.

6th innings seen the Tigers bats awake and string some hits together and post a 4 run innings to take a 5-2 lead.

A pitching change for the Tigers seen the flood gates open for the home team as the went on a six in a row hit streak to post 4 off their own runs before Sanga came into the game of the DL to put Lenny out of his misery and hose out the fire, limiting the damage.

So we head into the top of the last with Tigers needing to score 1 to make Glenelg bat again, but a lead of walk to Kingy & hit to Bradey without being able to convert them into runs seemed the theme of the day and Glenelg went home well deserved 1 run winners.

Grant Wilson was outstanding for Glenelg going the complete game on the hill & picking up few hits. A cameo by J-Lo with a couple of doubles was only spoilt by a brutal dropped catch.

Pretty good game with GBC the winner!

Glenelg Report

As much as I was tempted to submit "read his report" for this week, I'll give you our perspective and highlights to round out the day's games on Blake Horrocks Cup Day.

Highlights:  -  Assistant Coach Abroe went 4-4 with clean hits but the absolute highlight was Sean "HP" Halfpenny's diving catch at centre right at full stretch.  We gave it a crack in an entertaining game of baseball but that was about it for the day...

Scorer Peter McGearey had to call to the bar for more red pencils after both sides made their score books look like a sunburnt lobster...

Pottsy started on the mound, keeping them to 2 through the first innings and we were all tied up 2-2 after 3.  With 3-up, 3 down for the Tigers top of the 4th, we scored 4 more to be up 6-2 but the Tiges tied it up again in the 5th.

In a tribute to the day, we brought on our import, Steve "I've got a curve ball" Horrocks, much to the distress of his family on the sidelines....  If we thought Marty Leaker piffing pies wasn't bad enough, the only curve we saw from Horrocks was caused by gravity.  Coming in to save the day but giving up 7, we struggled to get back in the game, finishing with a late 2 runs but not enough to breech the gap that the Tigers had forged.

Asst Coach Abroe finished off on the mound with no runs against him but the day was the Tigers'... Hopefully someone let Coach Mezzini know while he was watching the great Wasabi Bob chalk up a win at Morphettville...

Again, as I say each week - we show glimpses but let ourselves down (normally in one horrendous innings), and struggle to recover, but we are improving and getting closer to a win.  Hopefully that comes THIS season...!!

Tigers Report

Marty started pitching and threw the whole game a very good effort he also hit the  ball well. The game was played in good spirits and at one stage the result could have gone either way, I was proud of the way  we played it out, against some excellent pitching

Our defence was solid and batting overall respectable

Well done and let’s keep it up
