New season new model, women’s Division 1 baseball has moved to Sunday afternoon’s and we were greeted to a beautiful afternoon at Glenelg to kick off the season against a dangerous Southern Districts outfit.
Whilst we had a disrupted pre season compared to years past our experienced returning group of players supplemented by a few new additions scratched out a nice win. Our pitching set the tone. Bianca Smith with 4 strong innings conceding just the 1 earnt run for the win (4IP, 3R, 3ER, 1K), Alice Prokopec shut the door earning the save with a scoreless inning (1IP, 0R, 2K).
Offensively we took advantage of opportunities with 11 BB and 2 HBP helping keep runners on the bases regularly with the middle of our order cashing in on RBI opportunities – Prokopec (1), Maslin (4), Smith (1), and Harris (1) all opening their accounts.
Two new debutants for the tigers off the bench with both Ella White and Sophie Kinnear getting a taste of the action. A nice opening hit out to start our campaign as we build towards in/mid season form. In the end a 10-3 victory on opening day.
This week we have a milestone game as Jacqui Dunn becomes the fourth member of the GBC to play 50 Women’s Division 1 games. Jacqui has contributed to the club both on and off the field, part of the 2020/2021 Premiership team and is now into her second year on our board of management. Jacqui joins Bianca Smith, Jenna Handy and Jenny Dunn who achieved this milestone late last season. Bianca, Jenna & Jenny will receive their 50 game commemorative hats at our club season launch this coming Saturday.
