Division 1 - Glenelg 10 def Southern Districts 0

We faced the Hawks from Southern Districts in a match up Friday night in which the ultimate score did not represent the game as a contest.  An eventual 10-0 victory on the back of a high quality game long approach on both the offensive and defensive fronts but it wasn’t until the fifth inning of the match that we put the game away with a five run inning that took some air out of the contest.

South’s starter was superb in her 3+ innings, coming out in the fourth after an injury scare saw her depart with some pitch count up her sleeve.  We all hope for her quick return to the diamond.

The main story of the night was the high quality performance of our tiger pitching duo.  Prokopec took her second start of the season and turned that into four complete innings, racking up 7 strikeouts before departing with plenty of pitch count remaining.  Smith came in for her tune up outing preparing for her next start with a near immaculate inning – striking out all three she faced.

A line up shuffle as a result of illness saw Smith and Maslin handle shortstop duties and handling the occasion well, providing some additional depth options behind usual starter Dunn.  Great defence from our outfield also contributed to our improved performance.

Offensively we kept regular pressure on Souths reaching base 17 times on the night, with multiple hits being racked up by Handy (2), Smith (2 - HR), Maslin (3), and Mitton (2).  More pleasing however was the quality execution when required with sacrifices, quality at bats and aggressive base running shown by all.

We got a little lucky with Souths also being a little understaffed on the evening so both teams have more to show as this season progresses.  We are schedule to face Sturt this Friday, our original match up round 1 was postponed so looking forward to our first close up look against this squad.

Congrats to our Division 2 and 3 teams on quality wins back at the bay – fantastic results all round.

Division 2 - Glenelg 11 def Dodgers 9

Division 3 - Glenelg 11 def Golden Grove 5

After a draw in Round 1, the Div 3 Women recorded their first win of the season with a strong 11-5 victory over Golden Grove.

The team showed excellent improvement in the field and on the back of strong pitching performances from Jacqui Dunn and Tracey Tuting, made some sensational plays.

Lee Hayes took a great catch from a very hard hit line drive and doubled up the runner at 3rd while Kate Kim also took a good catch at short stop and doubled up the runner at 1st.  Two double plays in only their second game of baseball – outstanding!  Kate also made several other outs to 1st base with strong and accurate throws.  Sarz Husi took a spectacular catch at left field which was celebrated long and hard with her team mates.

This was a real team effort with once again everyone having good at bats.

This week we travel to West Torrens for our first away game.  If the team continues to improve at it’s current rate they will have many more wins in store!
