Facing the Dodgers from Golden Grove we flipped the game ball to Bianca Smith to start the game. Bianca came out of the blocks firing working around a baserunner to give us a clean top of the first. Showing patience that would be a feature of the day’s offensive proceedings Handy led off with a walk. Loading the bases early we posted our first five spot for the day, Jo-Anna Kenney’s 2 RBI single a highlight.
Bianca was in a hurry to hit again and retired the Dodgers without them troubling the scorers and we went into the bottom of the second up 5-0. Golden Grove settled however and some good infield defensive held us to just the one run.
The game got weird from here as strikes started to dry up for both teams, Smith departed and Em Parker came in to a tough situation – Golden Grove ultimately scoring 5 of their own. Not to be affected the ladies took control of their destinies again, putting up another five spot to take us back to six run lead.
Jo-Anna Kenney came in mid inning to retire the side giving us another great potential option as the season progresses. In a scrappy game late we came away with the victory by the score of 11-8. Bianca’s early dominance and Kenney’s strong all round day keys to our victory. Great to see the ladies remain patient, waiting for strikes to swing at hard. Big match up this Friday at home against the undefeated Sturt Saints. See you down at the bay.
The Div 2 girls took on Adelaide Angels this week for their first game away! Being the away team we were first up for hitting and Emily Pyke lined up to bat for her first game of the season. We were off to a cracking start with 3 runs in the first innings!
Alex Meldrum was first up off the blocks to pitch and Sarah Wright behind the plate. We played well defensively and put our training to good use, and even getting a double play (which was almost a triple)! Erica Colmer played her role on first base well and really put her body on the line for one out, where she fielded the ball off the ground and hilariously crawled her way to the base before the runner.
It was a great game for the Div 2 girls having sealed the win in our final batting innings. There were a number of stand outs for the night: Shona Baldock got her first hit and smashed it across the park, Fiona Crabb made it home for the first time, and Erin Harris took to the plate for the first time like a duck to water! The girls made their way to GBC after the game to celebrate both division wins!
