Glenelg lost to Green Hurricanes 13-3

Sorry for missing last week’s deadline all but we can’t let the final game of our inaugural season go by without the ladies getting recognised for their fantastic efforts.  Our final game consisted of the 8pm late game against grand finalists green hurricanes.

This game reinforced the old saying that “baseball is a game of inches”.  In the first inning we had multiple infield ground balls take horrible hops of the lip of the grass cutouts or just clip the edge of gloves on balls that with the benefit of a little luck (combined with the greatly improved defense of our squad) would have seen the likelihood of a quick low scoring inning.  Highlights early was a wonderful catch in right field by Jane Ryan and some great hot corner defence by April Grava over at third.  Emily again was great on the mound and unlikely to not get a different result.

Facing a very good pitching performance from both of the hurricanes pitchers offense was always going to be difficult and we didn’t get any breaks early when Gemma Cassidy crushed one down the line to deep left only to be caught on the line and robbing her of extra bases.  Speaking of extra bases one of the teams hardest luck stories all year has been the hitting form of Jordy Heidt.  Jordy despite maintaining some high quality swings and at bats all year long had received no love in the box score coming into the game hitless.  That would all change with her final swing of the season – crushing a ball over the head of the left fielder for a stand up rbi double.  Well done Jordy – very well deserved.

Final score ended up 13-3 but despite that spirits stayed high post game and the majority of the team indicating an interest to play on next year.  Based on the development during year 1 alone this team projects well for a sizeable increase on this years 2 victories next season if that is the case.

Thanks to all the wonderful ladies for your time and efforts this year – Aled and I have had a great time with you all and thanks to Bev & Peter McGeary for their help scoring throughout the season as well.

Don’t forget the grand final for the league is at West Beach this Friday from 6!
