Battle of the Bay – Round 2
On diamond 1 on a gorgeous Friday afternoon the women of the GBC faced off in an entertaining and engrossing competition. The CUBS still smarting from our round 1 defeat to the Tigers were keen to extract some good natured revenge on the back of some improved form over the past few rounds.
Unfortunately after threatening early in the top of the first we got a wake up call in the bottom of the first with the Tigers racing out to a 7 run mercy inning. Looking like it might have the beginnings of a long rough game the guys raced back into contention with a four run frame to state our intentions that we were not going to lying down and take what they gave us. From that point onwards in what was a truly impressive turnaround the team rallied behind Emily and later Jenna on the mound not giving up a single extra run the rest of the way. Good defense coupled with some key strikeouts allowed the CUBS to dance out of trouble whenever the Tigers threatened and offensively we kept adding on.
1 through 10 in the line up showed patience in working quality at bats and some clutch decisive hitting late brought the tying and go ahead runs in. One final nerve wracking defensive inning remained holding the solitary run lead and whilst the Tigers again threatened the CUBS women showed a bend not break resilience that saw them come away with our second win of the season.
Congratulations to the Tigers for not just playing a competitive and entertaining game but playing it with the class and spirit that will help new players to the league appreciate the beauty that is baseball. Thank you and best of luck for the rest of your season.
Congratulations to the entire CUBS team – it was a truly team based win with hits and on base efforts evenly spread along the line up. Special mention however to the resilient Jordy Heidt who despite suffering the effects of tonsillitis and a non sympathic coach pre game battled through helping us towards this significant victory. Also an acknowledgement for ALoy who got no support from me during the game whilst I was on kid duty – who showed great support, encouragement and direction for our developing team.
The game was always going to be close, on game day I coach the tigers and we jumped out with 7 runs, a good lead, I was never confident it would be enough knowing the Glenelg team as I do and them having some quality players yet to stamp there ability on the result ,to the tigers credit we never gave up and still could have won, it wasn’t to be.
We rolled out Lissa to pitch and she did well she is pitching better each week, Alex then came in and closed game she also pitched well , we fielded ok a couple of small mistakes but overall pretty good ,the ball is now being thrown to the right bases so that is encouraging. Dana played first base and owned it well done! Marie did a good job at second and Cheryl always toughs it out as catcher
There was some good times at bat but overall didn’t hit as well as our previous games.
I haven’t written anything on the Glenelg team as not to still Benders thunder
The Both team are all doing well I am sure the girls are enjoying it, all seem to like being in a team environment and it is making the GBC a better place. Please keep up the good work.
