Division 1

Glenelg defeated Southern Districts 8-4

Heading down south in a crucial clash with the hawks, we werent about to give up the Blake Horrocks cup without a fight.

After a moment of silence for the young man, and a presentation of last years premiership ring to Steve horrocks, the game got underway and we were quick out of the gate thanks to a 2-run home run to Terrell Joyce.

Tim Day took the hill for us, making his first start in a couple of seasons, and was fantastic firing 6 innings on the day. The only trouble he encountered was in the 3rd inning when Souths plated 3 runs on 3 seeing eye singles.

Connor Hill relieved Tim firing 2 perfect frames before Wes Roemer made his maiden debut firing the last inning to preserve the victory.

Offensively there was an even spread of hits with Joyce and Handy supply the big blows, each hitting a 2-run home run.

Glenelg defeated Adelaide 3-1

Our final midweek West Beach game came against a tough opponent in Adelaide whom were equal with us on the ladder.

We handed the ball to Terrell Joyce who has been fantastic since Christmas and he did not dissappoint on this occasion, hurling the complete 7inning game allowing 1 lone run in the 4th inning.

Offensively we hit the ground running scoring two in the first. We had base runners all day just couldn’t quite blow the game open with that big 2 out hit.

Dale Ziersch, Max Brown and Dylan Bentley led the way each collecting 2 hits as we held on for a 3-1 victory

This weekend is a massive weekend for the club as not only is it Ladies day, but we host Sturt in what will be a good test for our team. We look forward to seeing as many familiar faces down the club this Saturday cheering on the boys.

Division 2

Glenelg defeated Southern Districts 15–1

Fresh off another disappointing draw we were keen to score more than the other guys on Saturday and with the welcome addition of last years Capps medalist we had a good chance of making that happen. We started the first slowly only getting a couple guys on before Souths retired the side. In the field it was looking even more shaky as Souths managed a one out, stand up triple, scoring a couple pitches later. Luckily that is where the runs stopped, for the inning…and the day.

In the third we started to get really get going, sending 14 dudes to the plate (8 with two out) and scoring 8. Hits to Ross, Clavell, Gluyas and Roemer doing the damage with 2 RBI’s each. The fourth seemed to go for an eternity. We scored 5 runs before getting our first hit, finishing the dig with 7 runs, 5 walks and back to back 10+ pitch at bats.

On the mound Burns was good for 3 innings, keeping their bats quiet with only 2 hits. Steff came in to finish the fourth (and last) inning, capping off a far more productive day than last week.

Division 3

Glenelg defeated Southern Districts 6-0

The Big Dawg keeps driving ‘em in.

A top of the table clash is always a great challenge to see where you are at. Facing The Hawks at home we expected nothing but a tough battle, the final score doesn’t really reflect the game overall. Jayden Eldridge took the pill and escaped a bases loaded jam in the first inducing an inning ending fly ball to left. The Big Dawg Deeble lead off with a single, Alex Marsh got him over to 3rd with a hit of his own and a Clavell sac fly had the good guys up 1-0 after one. Jayden went to work from here going 5, while striking out 8 along the way, another very good outing against a strong veteran hitting line-up. With the Big Dawg on in the 2nd and 2 outs Marshy hit a double to drive in our 2nd run. With the score still at 2-0 after 5, Sid Reynolds lead off with a single and a misplayed double play throw saw two runners on base. The Big Dawg stepped up again with a 2 out 2 run single followed up by Luke Thompson’s double to the fence to plate another couple runs and suddenly it was out to a 6-0 lead. Tristan Stevens faced the minimum in 2 innings to close it out, as the bays pulled one extra game clear at the top. With 4 games left in the regular season we will continue to build on the start we have had, getting a new W each week still remains the goal.

Even though the 3s don’t actually play for the main prize, whenever the Blake Horrocks cup weekend is on we love to salute our annoying little brother by playing hard, and popping the lid off one for him after the game. Safe to say we did both. It was awesome to see Steve, Kerri and Ash on the weekend, our thoughts are with you guys and Teagy. Love ya Squid.

Division 4

Glenelg defeated Southern Districts 4-3

The Al Gores were looking to take the form from the previous week’s win over first placed Goodwood into the clash against Southern Districts at the bay. Unfortunately that was not to be. Kymbo slice once again took the pill on the hill, dealing to the Krajinator who once again was filling in for the injured Killer.

The first inning went pretty much to plan with a donut to the visitors followed by some good stick work by the Tiges. Walks to Freezer, the Krajinator, Zooter and Patty-G plus a hit to Kymbo slice had us up 2-0 after one.

Just when you thought everything was going to plan, the top of the second second had those plans crumbling like a freshly baked pavlova. A leadoff walk followed by three consecutive seeing-eye singles had the visitors up an about, taking the lead 3-2 after one and a half. The good guys hit back with singles to BA and Kymbo with a towering pop fly by Zooterman that exited the earth’s atmosphere. As the pill re-entered from space it apparently burnt up on re-entry making it impossible for the opposing pitcher to catch it. Freezer and BA scored putting us back ahead 4-3.

Kymbo laboured through without further damage through four before succumbing to a sore elbow. Big Zoot took the pill and immediately went full Randy Johnson striking out the first two hitters. Our bats remained afraid despite a solid Steak smash and a Freezer line drive, but with Zooter dominating on the bump, the score remained 4-3 into the last.

With time running out, Souths managed a couple of baserunners late to put some pressure on. No dramas for big Zooter who, apparently sick of dominating on the hill, just picked two dudes off first to finish this one off.

Whilst the game itself was fairly similar to enduring root canal or sitting through a full session of parliament, the result was still a win and a handy two points to keep us at the pointy end of the table with a very tough road game ahead against Sturt this week.

Division 5

Glenelg defeated Golden Grove 5-4

Meady had a great start on the mound for the first 4 digs, followed by Matt Katie Holmes who closed the game well. With multiple GBC teams all playing at 10am, it was hard to find a full squad for the early drive out north - so thanks to Tom Burton for filling in, and also thanks to the Div 4 boys for loaning us Feno who destroyed a ball over left field, but unfortunately he picked the longest part of the fence which reduced it to a stand up double. Stojani also picked up a good double, and the rest of the team hit well too. A few errors let Golden Grove get within a sniff of victory but it was good to see the lads hold them out in a close game. This week we take on top-of-the-table Southern Districts which is always a good challenge to see if we can take them down.

Division 6 - Glenelg

Glenelg tied Kensington 3-3

Even with the 10am start at Kensington, a fast paced match saw us get up 2-0 in the opening innings before Kensington put on 3 in the 6th to take the lead. Fortunately we were able to tie it up in the 7th and hold it at 3-3 with neither side scoring in the 8th resulting in our first draw for the season. A great effort from Sanga on the mound pitching the entire game along with Bayles Sr and the Lurker doing their bit with the batting and scoring.

Thanks to Greg Dendy, Luke Bramley, Blake Hall and Bayles Jr for assisting us with our numbers as we were down 4 players this week.

As we approach finals we still have our eyes on the minor premiership which is in reach if we win our remaining 4 matches.

Division 6 - Tigers

Tigers defeated Adelaide angels 13 - 5

We started pitching Mouse and he did well. I was mindful of his pitch count as not to give him too much work, so keeping him  fresh for the finals. Marty our illustrious president came in and threw strikes making the angels swing the bat and with our lead it worked perfectly getting outs

We did drop a few simple catches put overall fielding not to bad. We again scored more than enough runs to win bats doing the job ,Leon and Julian the stand outs but all helped. Kristen caught well.

Please keep it up we will have training 6pm on Tuesday if you can make it .please watch for a game time change for this Saturday coming against Kensington (home game).

Division 7 - Glenelg

Glenelg defeated Kensington 10-3

This week Glenelg’s Div 7 side took on Kensington at Glenelg (Diamond #2).

Peter Fenwick took the starter’s spot on the hill and threw solidly for 4 innings, giving up just 3 hits, 2 walks and 6 six strike outs – all for just 1 run.

With the bat we scored from the start, posting a total of 7 runs after just two innings.

The slowness and loop of the Cardinals pitcher then seemed to put our bats (or hitters) to sleep, as we posted doughnuts in the next three innings.

In the fifth Andrew Gluyas took to the hill with early success – three up three down!  After five we led 7-1.

Keen for another dig with the pill Gluyas climbed the hill for the sixth and, despite getting the leadoff hitter out, gave up a few hits and 2 runs; but closed the dig with his second and well-earned strike out.

With the score now 7-3 and our team being light on for relief pitching our hitters did the right thing and posted 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth, taking the score to 10-3 and providing us with some breathing space as we took the field for the last dig.

The coach then ended his two-week sabbatical and, despite walking the leadoff hitter, threw enough strikes (after gaining some valuable feedback about the strike zone from Umpire Begg) to let the field do the work and end the game.

Thanks to Andrew & Darcy Gluyas and Matt Laverty for providing valuable playing support as some of our “regulars” were again unavailable.

Hits: Ceglar, Pick, A Gluyas & Hill (2 each), Fenwick, Hayward, D Gluyas & McIntosh (1 each) and Laverty (2 walks from 2 at bats).

Division 7 - Tigers

Tigers defeated Henley & Grange 18-4

What a difference it makes when the bats turn on and we are tight in the field...

Everyone scored runs in this game, everybody got a hit, 2 home runs, and we executed the basics well.

With all our ‘band-aid’ pitchers out this week, the great man Pottsy opened the pitching, throwing 5 innings to give up only 6 hits and 2 runs.  He was ably relieved by Bayles, who did his warm up in the bar after playing 6’s.

A 5-run first inning set us up but we were quiet for the next 3 innings, exploding out of the box to finish strongly – 4 runs in the 5th, 7 runs in the 6th and we finished with 18 runs on the board to do no harm to our For/Against percentage and even less harm to our finals aspirations.

‘Rhino’ Hill had a sweet hit to centre to tow the caravan around and turn a double into a regulation single.  Well done to the young fella Blake Hall, who waited until his Mum was out of the state before he got his first safe hits for the season, and produced some sharp work in the field.

Onward to Sturt, who are sitting right above us on the table.

Runs: 3 - Blake Hall;  2 – Bramley, Foletti, Stix (HR), Pottsy, Takos;  1 – Harry, Tom (HR), Bayles, Rhino Hill, Hiphoppapotamus

Division 7 - Glenelg

Glenelg lost to East Torrens 8-5

This week Glenelg took on the reigning premier East Torrens (ET) at Glenelg.

The last time we played was back in round one when we lost 3-6 and, having played ET in the last two grand finals (one win each), we knew another tough game was ahead.

Dave Mitchell started on the hill, keeping ET scoreless in the first two innings.  With the bat we scored our first run in the second, as a leadoff walk to Rob Hayward gave our subsequent hitters the chance to move the runner on – something which was achieved.

An error followed by a few hits in the top of the third gave ET their first two runs, however we quickly tied the game up with a second run in the bottom of the third, thanks to another leadoff walk – this time to Corban Ceglar and support from the following hitters.

The runs continued for ET in the next two innings, scoring three runs in each.  This saw the score read 2-8.

Peter Fenwick took over the pitching duties in the top of the sixth and did what was needed in keeping ET scoreless.  We fought back in the bottom of the sixth posting three runs as we strung some hits together and produced a productive innings.

With the score now reading 5-8 one innings remained and we were certainly not out of reach.  Another scoreless innings to ET gave us the opportunity to steal the win – but unfortunately, despite getting our leadoff hitter aboard, we were unable to score.

This game was another tight game played in the right spirit between two quality teams – something that is likely to be season again in the post season.

The loss brought our 13-game winning streak to an end, but more importantly provided a friendly reminder as to the quality of baseball we will see during the finals.

Hits to Pick (2) and Fenwick, Hayward, Sandercock, McIntosh, Hill & Northam (1).
